The 'War Wounded Community primary school Grafton' and some of its history.
The school was founded by the World Food Program (WFP), together with some other NGO's.
The government of New Zealand paid the canvas for tents for the school and the students.
Plan International paid the training of the teachers and provided school uniforms.
Soon after the civil war was over, these organisations stopped their support.
The school was left to its own fate, because the government of Sierra Leone does not
supply funds for school materials, salaries or food for the children.
The tent at the foto left shows the state of the housing at the end of 2003 when we connected to the school.
In 2004 we initiated the school feeding program.
In september 2005 this school tent collapsed completely during a storm.
The teachers and some volunteers used dirty blocks to construct a new small building.
The result is shown on the picture on the right. This building was renovated in 2006
by a joint effort of our foundation and members of Rotary District 1250 (Surrey and Sussex UK).
In addition the English group started an intensive fundraising for entirely new school buildings,
whereas the foundation collected funds for new school furniture.
In the summer of 2007 a new building for the primary school was constructed by the Dutch Foundation Word and Deed with volunteers of World Servants.
In addition buildings for the Junior Acadamy (sec. school) and a Vocational school were completed during 2008 by the efforts of
the English rotarians.
